LIVERPOOL - PT 1

CITY IN FOCUS

Liverpool: the Northern powerhouse is becoming as reputable as Manchester and Leeds for artistic influence, great music, young talent and great food. The false misconception of it being the city of fake tan and lad culture is being blown away by the upcoming tide of talent taking over citywide. Throughout the next few blog entries, we will tell you the best places to go and how to make the most of what Liverpool has to offer.

ALBERT DOCK

The Albert Dock is one of Liverpool’s great treasures, so give yourself a day to soak in all that this great place has to offer. Be sure to stop off at the Beatles story, because, well, why wouldn’t you? Get stuck into the world’s largest permanent exhibition devoted purely to the lives of The Beatles, don’t miss the hidden gallery, with a collection of rare photographs documenting their 1963-4 tour. Next up is the Tate, exhibiting both temporary and permanent collections. There is always something different for you to feast your eyes on, currently displaying phenomenal works from the likes of Yves Klien to the great Francis Bacon, considered one of Britain’s greatest modern painters. It’s easy to immerse yourself in this great gallery, which is now temporarily housing one of the most iconic works ever made Henri Mattise’s (The) Snail, which is on display until May 2016, it would be crazy to miss this opportunity. With a plethora of bars and restaurants to keep you wined and dined, you will find it easy to absorb yourself for hours on end.

WALKER ART GALLERY

Housing one of the largest art collections in England and promoted as the National Gallery of the North, The Walker art gallery holds an eye opening collection of work. Take a walk throughout  European history from 1300-1900. Then discover 20th century works from artists such as Lucian Freud, David Hockney and Gilbert and George, and you will find yourself spoilt for choice. Indulge in an afternoon of artistic inspiration.

ANOTHER PLACE. CROSBY BEACH

If its a nice day why not spend the afternoon down at Crosby Beach to witness Antony Gormley’s spectacle of 100 sea gazing sculptures. These life-size features, which are submerged twice a day by the incoming tide, are an incredible sight. Dotted along 3 kilometers of the foreshore and advancing almost a kilometer out to sea, it’s a beautiful spectacle that evokes inner emotion. A rarity within the art world, for a still installation to ignite such powerful feelings, the sculptures are a representation of the relationship of man and nature.
